About Standards & Correlations Return to Standards Browse
Introduction

Scholastic has updated this web site to enable all educators and librarians to browse educational standards, and to see correlations between those standards and our titles. We have created tools that offer rich, valuable data to aid educators and librarians the best possible collections with Scholastic titles.

Standards What are Standards?

This web site offers a way to view educational standards commonly used by all fifty states in the U.S.A. Standards are organized by subject and grade level.

Correlations What are Correlations?

We have correlated thousands of titles to the educational standards available, and continue to correlate more titles every day.

The web site offers the ability to list those titles that correlate to a specific standard. A user may then further search within those titles (for example, by publication year or reading level) using any search criteria. This will enable all educators to quickly locate specific titles that they deem are best suited to their collection and needs, as preferred by their school district.

Note that if a title is not currently correlated, but appears like it should be, this does not mean that no such useful correlations exist. Odds are that we simply have not been able to review that title for correlations at this time... but we're working on it.

Note that we do not currently have any correlations to Weston Woods titles. This does not mean that these products are not applicable to any standards! We simply have not identified the correlations (yet) and entered them into our database.

What Are Standards?

Educational standards itemize the concepts, knowledge and skills that students should acquire by the completion of specific grades.

"Standards serve as a basis of educational reform across the nation as educators and policy makers respond to the call for a clear definition of desired outcomes of schooling and a way to measure student success in terms of these outcomes." — National Research Council 2001

Standards are defined by various educational bodies. The majority of the standards presented on the Scholastic web site were developed and published by the board of education for various U.S. states and districts. The organization (but not the content) of these standards may have been slightly altered to fit into the structure required for use by this web site.

What Are Correlations?

Correlations identify the application of a particular objective (often termed a "strand", "benchmark", "indicator", "goal" or "objective") within a published standard to a particular Scholastic title. This correlation implies that the title addresses the objective on some level, and so would be appropriate to helping a student achieve that objective.
